Voxel Demo for 89
Posted by Michael on 18 January 2004, 14:24 GMT

[]Voxel2Space - Techdemo is an interesting 3-D demo for the 89 that displays a voxel world. What's a voxel? I'm glad you asked: A voxel is a combination of the words volume and pixel - the smallest particle in a 3-D world. This program doesn't actually do anything except look amazing, but perhaps it will lead to better games someday.

This looks amazing...(I wish I had an 89)...someone said earlier that voxel rendering was good for limited hardware....could it be done on an 86? (At a lower resolution and everything, of course.) It would be nice to see 3D engines for calcs other than the 89.

I'm the author of this software and I'm sure, it is possible to do it on the 86. It has enough ram for the maps and even for precalculated rays. The render methods aren't too complex for asm, it is all integer computation.

But I'm not sure about the 83(+), 24k ram is REALLY small. If you want a voxel map with a resolution of 8 bits per voxel, you can only store a square map of 156x156 voxels ( (24*1024)^0.5 = 156.7 ) and you need also memory for all the vars!

The Z80 isn't the problem.
