Joltima 2 for Game Boy Color
Posted by Nathan on 28 October 1999, 09:02 GMT
Justin Karneges is professionally developing a sequel to his famous TI-83 RPG, Joltima. Joltima--eventually ported to the TI-82, TI-85, and TI-86--was a revolutionary RPG with a vast overworld, multiple dungeons to explore, several towns, and a storyline. This new game is "completely different" from Joltima other than different class types and the trailing party. This will be a Game Boy Color-exclusive game. Source: Josh Morris, Macross Software

I don't understand. Is programming games for GBC similar to programming them for ti-calcs? I have a ti-89 and would love to see game boy games like Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening ported to the 89. I think I read somewhere that the 89's processor is faster than that of a GB. Is that true?

Excellent job on this port, if it even can be called a port, since it's so different. I noticed one thing, the screenshot on the front page looks a LOT like FF2 for the SNES. I have no problem with this, as FF2 IS the greatest RPG of all time.. :) Great job!

It's not a port. It's a completely new game he's begun writing for the Game Boy Color. The Game Boy Color's CPU is code-compatible with the Game Boy's CPU, which is an 8088 clone with Z80 ASM mnemonics, if I understand correctly.
That means it's not a Z80, but you would write ASM for it as though it were. Some instructions are not there, of course, and there are a couple other new ones.
But of course, the GB/C have a graphics processor, a dedicated sound processor, and was made to run graphical games, so you have to take advantage of that hardware (and you'll also have to completely rewrite any program you made for one on the other).
But (and to answer the on person's question above), if you've programmed for the Z80, you already know most of the mnemonics and need to merely learn how the Game Boy works.

what I wonder is why the TI-83 isn't given a hyperlink like the 82, 85, and 86; you're bound to make the 83'ers jealous! :P
