How To Use a TI for Internet Access At School
Posted by Nick on 9 October 1999, 22:54 GMT

Justin Karneges has published an interesting article regarding the usage of TI calculators to access the Internet in a classroom setting. Some people will find this interesting, especially the privileged few who take their laptops to school. :)

I would probably be easier (but more expensive) to use a cell modem in the laptop. In my school, it would be impossible to put a WLAN card in one of their computers without me getting in a tremendous amount of trouble. Therefore, the only solution I can think of is having a cellular modem in the laptop and using the Graphlink and the software. Maybe Microsoft could make Internet Explorer for the calculator!

We're sorry, that was the wrong answer.
We were looking for "Maybe Netscape could make Communicator for the calculator!," but you can have this lovely toaster oven as a consolation prize.

IE / Netscape

Maybe on Linux Netscape is cool, but on Windows (any version), IE is clearly the better browser. It's at least twice as fast, and actually implements styles correctly. Let's see Netscape support a style attribute on every tag :)

Heh, correct... Also, Netscape can't render DHTML worth a peice of... Shicaca. Now, back to the non-off-topic comment. Sure, it'd be nice to surf the web on your calculator... But come on people... So what if for 6 hours out of the day you can't use the internet... GET OVER IT. Your money would be better spent on bribing teachers to let you bring a laptop into the class. Also, you can't really "surf" the web, maybe you can check your e-mail, telnet or whatever... Possibly even chat on IRC, but isn't it just a *little* overboard?

can't surf the web?

Actually, you CAN surf the web. just like i used to, only differently. using a complex telnet connection to the states from Russia, i was able to bypass the massive per-hour charges a PPP connection used.

just use, oh, for example...LYNX.

IE is better, at least in my opinion (And I use Linux too).

I don't know why anyone would want to use their TI to access internet. I know it's a very good idea, but it's a lot of hassle and pain.

This is the most rediculious idea that I have ever heard. Anyone who would string that much wire around their body connected to a concealed laptop that they shelled out close to $500 for just to access telnet83 from their classroom is a retard and it would make all of our lives a little more pleasent if you would just stay in your room and you can surf porn sites all day and not write any other articles ever again.

Personal attacks are uncalled for. If you don't like the idea of using your TI on the Internet at school (no mater how convoluted it may seem to you to get it working) that's fine. Visit the page, notice it's a little too pricey and tricky to get working, chalk Justin up to being a one hit wonder (Joltima :)). and go on with your life. Please spew your senseless venom elsewhere.

And QBasic World isn't? We all have our vices people. If you would actually post something inteligent and *constructive* then maybe surfing the 'net at school would be a little more feasible for everyone and at some point easy for the "non-tech people" such as yourself (QBasic? I sure hope that is a stepping stone to something a little more advanced), of course if it gets the job done in your case who am I to judge?

Hey, fuck you!, I learned Qbasic when i was like 8. I learned by now that programming is a waste of everybodys time. It is pointless (unless you are making some $$$). So why dont you have some fun with ur new toy.

*shrug*

Programming is a waste of time if all you can do is make "Hello World" programs. I learned ATARI BASIC when I was five. And whoever said you HAVE to program for cash? Isn't there that sense of self-satisfaction you get? :) Programming is a hobby, not a job, for most people. For everyone who gets paid for their creation, there are ten more who don't. And do they think it's a waste of time? Apparently not.

It is a job as well. The people that made your calculator and computer operating system programed it as a job.

Hey, I'm making one of the most complex programs ever made with qbasic, which I can sell for $$$ as an .exe file.
