ticalc.org Breaks a Myriad of Records
Posted by Nick on 1 October 1999, 02:13 GMT

We've done it again this month as ticalc.org has broken many previous records in the month of September.

Weekly Requests: The week of September 5, ticalc.org broke their previous weekly request record (1,241,964 for 27 September 1998) with 1,319,691 requests in one week. The week after, September 12, we broke it again with 1,534,186 requests. For the following week of September 19, we had 1,449,810 requests, beating last year's record but still not re-rebreaking the record. Currently, the week to beat is 12 September 1999 with 1,534,186 requests.

Monthly Requests: Now for the good stuff. Our past record was 4,364,883 requests for September 1998. This month, we had a ubiquitous 6,089,551 requests.

Monthly MB Transferred: Now for the really good stuff. Prior to this month, we transferred 49,355 MB, or 48.198 GB, off the server in the month of September 1998. This month, we moved 102,613 MB of data, or 100.208 GB. This is the first time ticalc.org has broken 100 gigabytes of requests in one month.

We'd like to thank you, our loyal users, for helping make this the most memorable month in ticalc.org's hectic three-year-long history. It's been a wonderful year with its many ups and downs and we're looking forward to providing you with the same great service for many years to come.

Most files are pretty small, actually (under 100K) -- so are our pages and graphics. Some stuff like VTi is a meg. As Phil said, we get a LOT of requests for these little files, and they add up significantly.

Looks like you guys beat hpcalc.org. Last week I had 879,664 requests from 15,930 unique hosts totaling 9,012MB.

Maybe this week will be better.

That wasn't a record for me, however. I think I passed 1 million requests one week, or at least I was very close.

Muahaha, my plan to inflate our web stats by secretly sending several 1 MB graphics to every user through JavaScript is working perfectly! ;-)

You've already conveniently inflated the webstats with this site redesign. The number of pages a user must go through to get to the archive root directory is now 3 instead of 2. :)

Well, we were pondering this, and we thought "Hey! If it takes longer to navigate to the archive root, more people will learn to type /pub/ instead! Then they'll be more like Phil Genera."
The response to which was: "Wow, more like Phil Genera! Awesome!"

So we did it.

I know of a site that went through over 20 page requests just to load the front page. It loaded in almost five minutes, too. Now THAT'S inflated :P
*sigh*

What exactly is a "request"? I am sure there are other people out there who don't know this, so, for everyone, not just me! Well, I haven't been able to figure it out as I originally tohught it was site hits (but, why would you get "hits" for downloads?). But, that was obviously wrong...so, what ARE "requests"? Thanks for the info!

A simple web counter would count how many times a page is loaded. That is the common meaning of a "hit".

However a request is anytime you download an individual file. So for instance if the front page of ticalc.org has 5 screenshots, 3 icons for the file archive screenshots, and 1 logo image (at the top), then the total number of requests for the page would be 10 (9 for the images and 1 for the HTML file). You can see how that can add up very very quickly. :)
