Kirk Meyer in Search of Girlfriend
Posted by Nick on 28 September 1999, 00:44 GMT

Kirk Meyer has put up a web page announcing that he is looking for a girlfriend. All interested applicants should email him post-haste. Please note that ZAPO posted a premature article about this. Somehow or other, Danny managed to mistype the entire URL for the web page - for some reason, it pointed to a page containing an entirely different person as well.

Addition: Danny has since notified us that the article was due to a security leak in ZAPO.

ok, i come to this site almost daily for about 3 minutes to see what's up...i mean come on, 166 comments on a topic unrelated to calcs is a waste of time unless you live and breathe calcs(which is fine with me) but still guys(of course there are no girls, we scare them away) go find other places to comment...if i want to read the comments on a SERIOUS article, i don't want to read 166 of them. please end the nonsense, let's try and figure out what we can do to bring the female gender here instead of scaring them off. how about a survey as aforementioned.

Hello? Is anyone listening here? One of the main reasons that we, the female gender, do not post comments is because when we do, people treat us like we are a rare commodity. There are female programmers out there, just like there are male cheerleaders and male ballerinas. Besides, how do you know that there aren't millions of women, reading your comments, and preparing for world domination? So watch what you say, pathetic little men...

Lady Ada Byron was the first ever computer programmer, even though the computer didn't work.

The "166 comments" was the other fake news item about some kid overclocking his TI-89...

I like Fake News, But shouldn't it come when there isn't much happening, to get people to continue their interest. There was a whole week of no new news, and then over the weekend, and now, many news pop up, I am not complaning, but It was make me comfortable to spread them out a little.

I need a girlfriend too. I need her to keep my natural instincts in check. I am beginning to become a bit unstable.

I suppose I could, but my On button has been disabled and my automatic power down deactivated. Two options remain: electricute myself or get a girlfriend. I like the latter better.

Eh? If anyone's worried about reputation, it seems that it would be me... Regardless of whether you actually posted it or not, ZAPO as a whole should not have chosen an easily-discovered password. Besides, I imagine that whoever actually did it won't do it again because of this :P

Maybe that kid that was linked to hacked your page so he would get more hits :)

AFAIK, the "hacker" didn't use the password. I remember Danny told me something about a perl bug...

Hey, just because a couple weeks before this hack happens i hand out the address to a few friends of ZAPO, i have the ftp pass to ZAPO's site, and that I dont really like Kirk doesnt mean i did this!!! But it does make reasonable doubt....

Hey, um, that's not necessarily true... My local IP on my (10mbps ethernet [we would have a 100mpbs, but we don't have the money to get a 10/100 hub. All our NICs are 10/100, except for one]) network (at home), is 192.168.1.3 .

127.0.0.1 is your local IP address while you're connected to the Internet with TCP/IP. If you go to the DOS Prompt and type PING 127.0.0.1 you will get an average time of zero. This is different from your real IP address that is assigned to you by your ISP if you are a dial-up customer. You can find your real IP by running the file "WINIPCFG.EXE" in your WINDOWS directory while online.

Hey, my IP is 127.0.0.1 too! What a coincidence. Even more suspicious is the fact that you emailed me recently saying how terribly sorry you were about how you have treated me in the past... to avert suspicion, I would guess :P
