Virtual TI v2.5 Released by Rusty Wagner
Posted by Nick on 26 September 1999, 22:58 GMT

Rusty Wagner has released Virtual TI v2.5. For those of you living under a rather sizable boulder, VTI is the standard in TI emulation on your computer. Remember that you need a rom dump from your OWN calculator to use this legally. It is available for downloading from our archives here.

What's that? You don't know what an emulator is? Well, shame on you! For more information on emulators, click here.

A question

Ok, first of all I would like you to know my position first. For months now, I have tried to get the ROM off my 86. I download the VTI emulator, I got the ROM DUMP programs it required and tried numerous time to get the ROM off my calulator, but to no avail. Being determined as I, I went through all the documentation I could find on the subject, including ticalc.org's simple explanation to calc.org's process. Yet, I could never get it off no matter what I could do. So, I figured the tialc.org staff could help me if anyone could. So, I sent e-mails to help@ticalc.org, Kirk, and many others and to date I have no received one reply. Then I turned to the forums and discovered others that had the same problem, and when we got together asking for help, our posts were deleted. I would like to remind you all the did not violate the rules and regulations at all, in the most extreme case, they "deleter" may have thought we were asking for illegal ROMS, which was not the case and I don't see how one could interpret it that way. So, I'm asking once more, on behalf of my fellow men who have the same problem as I, can some one please, please tell me how to the my ROM off of my 86! Thats all I need. Is it too much?

Hi,

There's no telling what will happen if you email a particular staff member with a problem. Normally we'll forward such mail to the help account, but you're best off just emailing help@ticalc.org explicitly. Even then, we sometimes get behind, though seldom do we neglect an email entirely. I also want to say that we're not holding back any special instructions that you've got to email us to find out -- personal experience aside, the instructions we have for getting a ROM dump are on our Emulators page. Please check it out.

If the TI-86 instructions don't work for you, please tell us. However, bringing this up in our news section is normally off-topic (though on a piece like this one it's somewhat relevant). You can always post such questions to one of the mailing lists -- there's even a TI-Emulator list!

I apologize if you've done all this, and I assure you it's nothing personal (probably).

Chris

I have tried everything I can think of to get it off. I think that the problem may be the utility the computer uses because every time I run, it says finished at the top? Am I suppose to run it from Windows ( I have 98 ) or dos? I have evern tried to get the 85 ROM off and I still can't get it.

I have dumped an 86's rom. I have a PC with the parallel link. What do you have?

I have the 40 dollar graph link made by TI. No, it is not the new one, it is the one one that didn't come with a cd or anything thing, just the cable.

I think you need to put Rom Dump on your calc, and then capture the rom with a program like hyperterminal. It's been a while since I dumped the rom of mine, what I did was ran Rom Dump and captured the rom with a small program that uses the parallel port (RomDmpXP?). It took about 15 minutes.

Hi,

I (maybe) know your problem. I had problems transferring the ROM (of my TI83, but that shouldn't make difference) too.
The ROMDUMP program on the calculator side gave a SYNTAX ERROR.

This is what to do:
Press 'PRGM'.
Go to 'NEW'.
Press 'ENTER'.
Enter any phrase, for example 'ROMDUMP'.
Press 'PRGM'.
Go to 'I/O'.
Press 'ALPHA'. Press 'B'.
Press '9'.
Press 'PRGM'.
Go to 'EXEC'.
Select 'ROM8?'.
Press 'ENTER'.
Your program will now contain something very similar to: 'Send(9prgmROM83'
Press '2nd'.
Press 'QUIT'.

By this you made a program 'ROMDUMP', that will launch ROM8? in the correct way. Now run 'ROMDUMP', and it should work.

Please let me know if it works for you.

Tommy

That is only for the TI-83. The 83 was the first of TI's calcs that TI actually supported assembly language with, and the Send(9prgm*) is not used on the 86. On the 86, you use Asm(prgm*) for assembly progs. Hope this helps!

You might try a different ROM dumping utility. I don't know what the one I used to have was called, but I'm sure you could find the name of it in an emulator readme.

Use Randy Gulvana's (I think I speeled that right, if not sorry!) RomDump program, available in the ticalc.org archives under dos programs. Then send the file to your calc, *Please note that you need a TI-Graphlink*, then run the program on the computer then execute the program on the calc and in about 5 minutes you'll have your rom. ALSO READ THE README INCLUDED IN THE ROMDUMPING PROGRAM YOU HAVE!

Wow its pretty cool this prog was mentioned on betanews (www.betanews.com).

BTW, does anyone know if I can run 83 asm code on an 83 plus? How about the other way around?

No, you can't run any TI-83 assembly program on the TI-83 Plus and vice-versa. The TI-83 Plus should be considered as an entirely different calculator in this respect.

Great emulator. A very nice feature would be the ability to separate the LCD and the keypad. This will work even better when each one can be separately resized.

Do any TI-89 users know where I can get ROM v1.00 or an older version of userlib? The greyscale graphics in my games don't work with the new version of userlib, because the new version doesn't do greyscale on Rom 1.05.

If you look under the "out-of-date shells" section of the 89 archives on ticalc.org, you will find DoorsOS zip files for older versions of DoorsOS. That may contain an older userlib.

Sorry, but to get a ROM 1.0 you'll have to get it of a TI-89 with the ROM. You can no longer get it off TI website, which you obviously did to get ROM 1.05. You can, however, go to the program archives here and in the Windows Utilities (I think) is a program that will patch ASM programs for ROM 1.05.

I have a Ti-89 and I ran Math Suite(in the archives at Ticalc under Ti-89/Basic/Math). It crashed my calc and what ever I try to reset or even take all the batteries off, it would turn on but do nothing. Does anyone have this problem?

I have had that problem many times. To reset your TI-89:
* Take of your cover (Completely, don't just turn it around)
* Remove a battery (Only one battery needs to be removed)
* Unscrew the back-up battery cover
* take the backup battery out
* Wait about 10 seconds
* Put backup battery back in
* Now here's the tricky part: turn the calc over and hold ) and (-) with your left hand. While still HOLDING DOWN BOTH ) and (-), turn calc over again and with right hand put battery back in. DO NOT LET GO of ) and (-).
* If reset is not obvious in a few seconds, WHILE STILL HOLDING ) and (-), press On.
* Your TI-89 should be reset.

Does VTI have sound support to test sound files? If so, how do I use it?

To use sound right click on the screen, then make sure Sound is checked. As far as I know, sound should then work.
