Z80 Assembly Compiler v0.9ß For TI-86
Posted by Nathan on 15 September 1999, 22:40 GMT

Clement Vasseur of Icarus Productions has released ZAC, a program for the TI-86 which assembles ASM source code. Included is an editor designed specifically for editing ASM file on-calc by Jonah Cohen, and it also looks like a wonderful general-purpose text editor! On-calc ASM is hazardous, as a crashed program may wipe the calc's memory, but it may yet prove to be a wonderful hobby during math classes.

TI-89 Not to be Outdone: On-Calc Compiler Released

Shortly after ZAC, a TI-86 compiler that runs on the calculator, was released, we received word that Jean Milleron released Compiler v1.00. This program was (amazingly) written in BASIC, and takes advantage of the calculator's Exec command, which allows the use of Assembly commands in BASIC programs. Similarly to Clem's ZAC, Compiler includes a text editor for the calculator on which you can type code, then you can compile the program to be run on the calculator. This definately encourages the many programmers who say that "BASIC is useful too."

My hat goes off to Jonah and the man (I saw this on calc.org) who wrote a similar program for the 89 in BASIC. . .both these accomplishments are incredible, and this is a major step forward for the TI-Community. Thank you both.

~Dan C

would it even be possible to make a similar 83 program, since we don't have the Asm( command?

helluvajob, clem and johna... congrats.

yeah, it is volitile, but hey, what do you do before you exec real dos-compiled ASM programs? you back up memory!

true, this does take away from the idea of independance of calcs from computers, but hey.. now you can work on that game your writing at lunch or study hall (english class?)

also, you guys at ticalc should consider directories for includes, source, and programs made from ZAC... i know you could just put them in the existing ones; just a thought...

All of those things made by ZAC would be identical to the same things made by any other program.

If you want to convert, just open up your TI-GRAPH LINK software, and copy-paste into a program window.

If you take from the TI-GRAPH LINK software to Notepad or Assembly Studio 86 (no one has an excuse not to use this last program!), you'll need to get rid of the semicolons.

Hmm, maybe I'll brush up on my Windows programming and make a converter... it's totally simple--I could do 86p->text in DOS in no time.

Hi,
I think that this is a stupendous idea. The only thing that sucks is that one wrong step and your calc will crash. But it's the exact same thing when you write a prog on the computer so it works out good in the end. Thanks Clem, sorry about the email before asking about this, it was sure worth the wait though.

Why not port the software to other calculators, and add the ability to use calculator 1 for storage of the code and compiler, and to compile the code, and calculator 2 to test the program. When the calculator 2 freezes, just reset it, figure out the problem with the code on the calculator 1, compile it, and send it to the calculator 2.

Hey. I've used this program and it's very usefull. I've already made several things.
I can't wait until the final version is released. I've had several problems w/ it though. Sometimes after compiling and finds an error, it shows some weird symbols. And, it gives errors on things that aren't errors, like ret and ld hl,$0000.... then when I exit the program and recompile, it works :) Oh well. nice job. I would suggest using chmasc from kirk meyer. Can't wait till he finished that too :)

I think this compiler is the best even though I've already crashed my calc 4 times. It's nice to be able to fix minor errors in a program and compile it without touching a graph link! However, the on calc editor could use some work....maybe I'll have to do something about that if I could figure out how to create, read, and write to basic programs from asm.

Couldn't you use an Expander II to back up your calc before you tried to compile your code?

Thats what I was thinking. Would be nice if the IDE itself had an option to automaticly back up source files to an expander or another calculator.
