FreeCell for 86 Released
Posted by Nick on 9 September 1999, 23:29 GMT

Ben Mickle has released an 86 port of (in my opinion) the greatest game to ever grace the PC: FreeCell. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, FreeCell is a card game not unlike solitaire. Directions are included in the readme, so I won't elaborate much more here. From first-hand experience, it's a rather addictive game once you get the hang of it.

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again."

Yeah I can relate to that. There was a time when I went, "Solitaire? What kind of a messed up game is that?" And there was a time when I did not understand how to play FreeCell. Although I don't remember how I caught on to these games, I can say that I once didn't understand FreeCell.

Oh well...

I think it's about time Solytare got updated (not unlike Falldown Forever) with things like greyscale, timed games, scoring, and the down-left bug fixed. Until then, this game should keep me very satisfied. :-)

Yeah, you can use limited greyscale in Basic. Check out the 82 Basic Graphics in the archives. You can't easily use greyscale in a game, however, since you end up using a bunch of pic variables and the calc isn't fast enough to do anything else while it's showing the picture, so greyscale is really only useful in a picture viewer.
