Prior Flash Software Available? Nope.
Posted by Nathan on 27 August 1999, 19:39 GMT

Texas Instruments is now considering the ramifications of making obsolete versions of the Flash software for their calculators available. The old news item has been removed and the reported website no longer carries these files. When TI makes a decision we will be informed and report it here accordingly.
Update (Phil): TI has informed us that old Flash software will not be posted. You can still get it though, but you need to contact TI. Sam Craft has told us that he can handle requests for old Flash Software.

I have gotten quite a few programs to work on the v1.05 ROM version, but I want to know why I can't get any shell to work. Any help?

Yeah... I've had the same problem. Street Fighter 1.0 beta crashes the calculator when you exit the game (using doors os), and nibbles 89 crashes at the "press enter to play"-screen. don't know how to solve it else than downloading rom 1.00 from www.technoplaza.net and wait and hope that rom 2.00 will be better.
On the other hand, I'm quite sure it's possible to adapt doorsos (or wherever the problem is) to run on 1.05

The ROM patching program, created by David Hart, is available on Calc City (http://calccity.calc.org).

There is also information on making programs for both AMS versions, and the reasons (partially) why asm programs do not always work on the new ROM 1.05.

This seems like buerocracy (sp?) at its worst. Why on earth would TI make this decision? I guess I could see it if TI, for whatever reason, didn't want _anyone_ to get the old ROM versions, but that obviously isn't the case -- since they are still willing to send people the files if they are requested by email. Are they just trying to discourage people from downgrading their ROM? This makes me think that there must have been some security hole (maybe I'm paranoid) in ROM 1.00 that was corrected in 1.05. Why else would TI be so stubborn about releasing old ROM versions. But then again, if that were the case, why are they still willing to answer requests by email for the software? Are they trying to keep close tabs on who gets the old ROM versions or something?

Posting the software for free download would be bad. Consider that you must agree to an agreement before downloading even the new one from their site. Something similar would have to be implemented as well as a disclaimer that "this isn't current, etc. etc."

disclaimers and agreements flourish online i still dont understand why the would care whether we, the users, have access to the older versions...

think about it--what kind of message would the availability of "obsolete" roms give? To the average user, it implies that there is something wrong with the upgrade. Does Microsoft still offer IE3 for download? It's just bad business.

I agree that they definitely do not want lots people to have the old roms, though I don't know why. However, I doubt that there is a security hole on the basis that there is not much you can do with a graphing calculator…it not like you do much more with it (I don't think…). Let me know if there is though ; -)

Legal Action
Cliff

Since TI promised all us owners of 92+'s that, if we bought the module, we'd have ASM support, we're kind of in a position for legal action. Even the manuals says that assembly information is available on the website, but what they have is just a posting of their (incomplete) header files. I bought my 92+ module because the web site clearly stated that assembly programming would be supported, and yet TI's official position is still that ASM is not supported. Furthermore, they'll probably charge us for the SDK.
We have precident in this area...anyone remember Intellivision? They promised a keyboard addition for their console, and when it turned out to be vaporware, they were ordered to produce one by the courts. Are you listening, TI? :-)
