News Posting and Customization
Posted by Andy on 15 August 1999, 06:00 GMT

Many of you reported having problems posting using the new accounts. That problem has been fixed, so everyone should be able to post comments. If you have further problems please direct them to accounts@ticalc.org.

Additionally, many of you have reported the front page customizations not working. To enable the front page preferences, you need to go into the Account Preferences form. In it, you need to Check the option labeled "Enable Custom Front Page." To finish, click "Update." When you return to the front page and reload, you should find your customizations active.

You guys get TONS of hits on this site, why don't you get sponsors for the it. You could probably make a little cash and make it even better. Put small banners on the site and most people wouldn't even notice them, and you could use some of the money to do contests like dim-ti(i think).

no way man, banners would suck. they look ugly and would wreck the overall niceness of ticalc :)

umm, the point of a .org domain extension is for non-profit organizations. Putting up banners would make them a profiting organization.

Incorrect. I work for a non-profit organization (in fact, several of them), and all but one makes a profit on the fiscal year (usually). The real reason we don't have banners is we see no need for them.

Nah, it's ok to have banners on a .org to help cover your costs. (Or, in the case of Slashdot, you can ignore the .org entirely and just try to make money.)

However, we've always done this ad-free, and we'll keep doing it that way as long as we can.

Chris

PS - No need to remind us of all the cash we would have made serving up millions of banners :)

Do you think that people who work at non-profit organizations don't make any money? How would they be able to pay rent and buy food...? You and a lot of other people have quite a misinterpretation of the term "non profit"

Nonetheless, it's good that such a well respected force in the TI-Community doesn't place ads on their page, which would lessen the site's appeal.

I suppose most get their money through government funding and some measley donations. And some, our tax dollars.

"Non-profit organization" means "You get as much of what you want for free - donations are acceptable but not required - thanks a bunch and enjoy the show"

hmm... and sometimes, "we'll get our money from your paycheck anyway" :)

This all doesn't answer the question why we don't put banners up. The reason is simple, it was the original intention of this site to provide a service to the TI community. We do not want to taint this site with any annoying features like banners. SO far, we have been able to run this site very happily without them, and it is our desire never to have them. Sure, we could make money and upgrade our computers or get a little money on the side, but we believe that would ruin the spirit of our organization.

Yep, it is fixed. I was getting angry while it was broken. By the way, I think we should have a name search. So by typing in a name, we can find all the comments that they wrote. Or at least have links to them. e-mail me your thoughts

you can: if you go to search in the links bar, and un-check "Main" and "Files Archive", you can search just in the News archives, which I believe dates back to 1996. When you get the search results, choose an article, and use the "find in page" option in your browser to find that name again.
