"Project A" Proposed
Posted by Nick on 14 August 1999, 22:53 GMT

Matt Hernandez informed us of a project starting up for any and all TI coders called Project A. It is intended to bring as many TI programmers together as possible to create what could possibly be one of the best TI programs ever. What the program will be about is to be determined soon. If interested, we strongly suggest you go and apply.

Okay (once more!). Project A has changed a little. Everyones input has been taken into consideration and the way it will be run after this initial voting period has been changed.

Check out the site for the details!

Matt H.

P.S. It won't be up however, until 8:00 P.M. Eastern because of certain matters.

Well, I'm interested to find out what happens with this. Seems like a pretty complex idea, and who knows, it might turn out to be a good idea.

Though it could get ugly with programmers from around the world criticizing each others code...

Well, I have considered the great amount of work this Project takes (it is already a lot with 75+ people voting a day). But, I am prepared for it with ample patience, plus some in reserve!

I am interested myself how it will turn out. But, I have someone on my side that hasn't ever let me down before, so it will all work out!

Well, if you really want me to list nearly nearly 200 people...

...but, don't let that dicourage anyone! A new system has been put into effect for how Project A will run! Check it out!

<sigh> An RPG, huh? Well, this has never been my favorite game genre (I guess I'm too stupid for "thinking" games). I must commend the project organizers for their choice to use BASIC. I was surprised that they would choose this over ASM for programming a game (programming an advanced math program in BASIC, I can see...). My idea for the ultimate TI game programmed by a group in ASM? Anybody remember Defiance?.....

We at Sychosoft have something similar to this but we have multiple prodjects on all TI's,HP's,and PC's.We are now recruiting people to program, beta test, and graphic artistry. If you would like to join hit our webage or type http://sychoonline.cjb.net.

Also if you want to chat, learn how to program, use a message board,or just post a link come to our page.We would love to have you.Oh and also the site is not completly set up good.

Nah, they just didn't get the chance to get a prime spot on TiCalc's server. I mean, TiCalc even refused to put a notice up about the TBQA when it was formed (for those of you who've never heard of us, see http://tbqa.calc.org). I don't know how you managed to get Project A noted, but I would like to :)

I know this is kind of a stupid issue, but I thought it might be prudent to bring it up before the programming begins. Exactly what size of a program are we shooting for? I am sure we are all well aware of the memory capabilities of the calcs when compared to each other and some of them are simply pathetic in today's standards. Is there anyway we can compensate for this by writing different versions for different calcs, or deciding on a small universal size for the program with which to port?

Good question (er...point). That really has been addressed yet. However, I am away that some calculators have MUCH more memory than others. So, I am going to consider (this would be done after the initial program/ports are done) remaking the program for the calculators with more features, memory, etc. so that they can take complete advantage of the calculators capabilities!

"Yep, it's going to be the coolest game ever. We have no idea what it's going to be, or how programming by committee is going to work, but we can definitely say it's going to be the coolest game ever."

Good luck with your project, guys, it sounds to me like you're setting yourselves up for a logistical nightmare.

Might I ask exactly where you got that quote? I haven't seen it anywhere by anyone running Project A, so, I tend to find myself curious! Could you please inform me?

Thanks!

Question on capitibility
stealth  Account Info

The idea your going for is great, and I support it all the way, but my question involves porting the game to all the calculators. I own a TI-85, and a TI-89, and the basic programming between those two calculators has a significant difference, and yet it also has its similarities. So, porting the program would take alot work to some extent. Except for like, porting the 85 version to the 86 would be easy. Also, since your using the basic language, you have to go by the calculators resolution. The 85 and 89 have different resolutions by far, and so do all the other calculators. So, you'd have to do all the graphics over for some of the calculators. Also, the 89/92 have Error Handeling, dialog boxes, and many other useful tools that could be used for the game, that can't be used for all the other calculators, so you'd have to change alot of the code. If you decided to add those features for the 89 and all.

But, anyway, my big concern is the graphics and resolutions on the calculators. I'm sure you could work around the programming, and the graphics, but it'd take a long long time... it was just a thought, and I was curious on how you plan to handle that problem.

I think the idea is great...but I hope I have another idea just to make a GREAT game. Ascendancy/Master of Orion style.
