Mario 86 Released
Posted by Phil on 17 July 1999, 01:03 GMT

Ben Mickle has released Super Mario 86 v0.65 Beta for the TI-86. The game is based on the ever-popular Super Mario for NES. Even though this is only a beta version, one of the most important features about this game is that it is the first released greyscale scroller for a Z80 calculator. However, it still does not allow Mario to go past the left edge of the screen. But being only a beta, this game shows quite a bit of promise!

A few months ago I remember playing a mario game on my 83 (the file called mario_7B). And it is an excellent game which fits exactly with that of the original NES game, but with only two levels. It has all of the the secrets already integrated even the run and slide maneuver. It has small, super, and fire mario. The scrolling is smooth and the enemies are almost perfected (But the screen does scroll left). The programmer said that he/she would continue the progect but I have never heard from him/her since.

sounds cool...

Wow. I don't have an 83, but if the game is as complete as you say, it would have been quite noteworthy if the programmer had completed it.

Have you thought of bugging him or her again? :)

Do any of you actually program yourself? Graphics are hard as hell, and i think that these are quite good. Some of you should try to draw better graphics, then send them to this guy and have him use those.

I totally agree with you I have given up on programming some games because sprites take so much time to draw and design and even harder there own spirte routine including: scrolling to the row after so many bits, anding oring and xoring specific pixels, and lets not forget our gray-scale on this game.

I agree too.Bills mario it was hard to see morio when he got in front of something it was black and white.just because he had more sprites does not mean a thing.I happen to like it and it does look a lot like the original.

What calc would that be for? Of all the Mario games, I don't recall one being by "Auroa". Do you for some reason mean "Aurora", the shell?

That game is in this site just go to archives and it's a asembly game for TI-86 and you can find the game name "Super Mario 86 v0.91" and there is hundreds of level you can choose from or you can creat your own level with the level editor on your calc. And I have to say that the graphic is great and it's way the HELL better than this one.

I'm well aware of that Mario game by Bill Nagel, thanks anyway. Now that I carefully re-read the original post in this thread, I think I understand what was meant (I had difficulty because of the awful way it was written):

"By the [Aurora]" is a reference to Bill Nagel, as he created Aurora?

Problems

There were a good amount of bugs in this program. One I thought was odd was when you fall off the edge, when your big, you stay big when you restart...instead of going big again.

Yes, I caught that bug and others after I released it. Most of them have been fixed, so the next version shouldn't be so buggy.

Re: Re: Re: Mario 86 Released

The first version of this game wasn't very good, but .76 or whatever really fixed a lot of the little problems that betas sometimes have. That version is getting close to Bill's Mario. If a level editor was added, and maybe some blocks and power-ups from Mario 3 (racoon tail) for use in the level editor, this game would Be far better than Bill's (which may be the best game for the 86 right now). The editor is a must though

Actually, I already have an on-calc level editor which I used to make the levels included with the game. It is fully functional, but not very user friendly yet. But the main reason it isn't released is because I will probably change the world format again.

Congrats on a good game
AlienCow

Cool game, Ben! I understand this is a beta - and the first release at that - so I won't say anything bad about it. :)

Just wondered, though (since you didn't mention it in your readme), do you plan on including the ability to break through the ceiling to go to secret warping areas?

If you decide to change the format again, will world 1-1 be 101 bytes? (like it was on the nes)

Another Bug

If I remember correctly, you cant smash blocks when you're small Mario, but you can in this one...
