More Programs Escape from the Void
Posted by Kirk on 12 July 1999, 22:11 GMT

Sam Heald of Void Productions has released AShell (83) and Usgard (85) versions of Dying Eyes, one of the best RPG's made for a Z80 calculator. Dying Eyes boasts eight different skills, eight different spells, a Final Fantasy-like battle system, multiple bosses, multiple dungeons, and even multiple endings with well-done, originally drawn graphics. The previously released files of these ports, which were only made availible for downloading on the Void site, contained memory corrupting bugs. These bugs were in the original coding, and so the original CrASH version has been updated as well.

Sam has also released an Usgard port of the popular Tetris Attack, a TCPA game, which won the 82 and 83 POTM awards recently. One of the few assembly sports games, Baseball '99, has also been made availible for the 85.

Thank you!!! You've done so much for the TI community, I don't think anyone can really pay you back for all the hardwork you've put into it. Especially porting Dying Eyes to TI-83 AND TI-85!

Hey, I downloaded dying eyes and ran it on my emulator. Whenever I get into a battle, I die first thing. I can never kill anyone. Could anyone help me?

Whether you survive exiting the dungeon is almost all a matter of what stats you choose at the beginning.

I recommend:
70 hp
20 mp
70 strength
0 intelligence
10 dexterity

Spell = Heal
Skill = Cut-All

The monsters in the dungeon are slow, so you do not need to worry about dexterity too much(but the faster you are, the faster you can attack). The heal spell is given regardless of Intelligence. Strength increases the amount of damage that you inflict and sustain. MP is needed for the HEAL spell.

Other tips to survival (in the beginning):
1)Be sure to collect all of the chests because HP and MP kits are very helpful early on, as are experience points

2)Be sure to level up before fighting the boss to raise your HP and MP.

3)Use the HEAL spell only in battle and do it often. Healing out-of-battle requires much more HP.

4)When fighting 3 enemies simultaneously, use the cut-all skill to eliminate them quickly.

5)Learn the timing of certain enemies. Some enemies are slower than others. Sometimes you can kill an enemy before it has a chance to attack.

Hope that helps.

Dying Eyes is a beat-ass game. I ran it on a TI-86, running YAS (the only shell that can run it, I believe, on the 86). I won it in one day. I hope the 2nd game is made on an 86, as the game world was somewhat small. THIS IS THE BEST RPG FOR THE TI-8X!!!! 2nd is Joltima, but Dying Eyes has a much better plot, engine, graphics, and has a good feel to it. Download this game unless you have severe grudges against RPGs.

Good Stats

The only good way to play is:
50 HP
70 S
50 MP
0 I
0 D

give yourself at least 65 S! Strength is the key to surviving!

Hi Sam. I have played Dead Eyes on the TI-83. The first time I played it I was using SOS, and when the "Game Over" text appeared when I died, the game froze and forced me to take out the batteries. I figured it might be meant just for A-Shell because of the "More Programs Escape from the Void" paragraph a the top, but the same problem occured. HELP, this looks like a cool game and I want to play it!!!

Attention 83 users!!!
Sam Heald
(Web Page)

Yes, there was a bug in the currently avaible 83p. The calculator would lock if you died facing a boss due a stupid PUSH/POP mishap. The fixed version should be availible on ticalc.org or the Void page soon. I apologize for the inconvenience of resetting your calculators.

The bug was not in the 82/85 versions, but I've decided to release the source codes to all versions, so those zips have been updated, too.

These should be the last updates to this program unless I decide to impliment some sort of compression to save some space on game maps.

One last thing to 86 users, I'm not going port Dying Eyes to the 86. If you want to play it, run the 85 version using YAS. If someone else wants to port it to the 86, I don't object.

hehe. I didnt even know about this. I love finding out these little surprises. I do have a ton of code finished for FFX5, but i never finished the game. Maybe sam or someone will want to pick it up? It looks totally awesome.. ive programmed it dynamically so you can have 4 chars at any time.. but diff chars, and you dont always have to have 4. So the game has a lot of progression. It also has a zelda/little dude type map thats animated and has great potential for puzzles. Oh well. I hope the problems with the dying eyes ports get fixed! Thanks a lot sam.. hope you all enjoy the game (i hope its the best ti-rpg hehehe)
