Ummm...I think that ticalc.org should not have taken that post down. It was a worthy news article
although I believe this is a worthy news article as well. It was the users that responded harshly. I think that some of you owe us an apology. You stereotype our group because we are not as experienced as other groups and you make assumptions about us. I think the TI community needs to learn a lesson on respecting the programmers =)

Well, whenever a group has never released a single program that it can call its own - and now they are going to say, "We're closing until 2000" - you call it what you like, I call it a publicity stunt. And don't tell me that a little shell is a real program :P

Additionally, most of the comments under the article were flames toward you. However, since we did previously post an article about it, I mentioned you in the italics (above), and I will now edit the article so that there is a link to your page, in case people want to know.

Hrmmm...I'll have to talk to Raven about it but even if it was a publicity thing those flames weren't nescessary.

True. I did announce the end of my career. And true, I wrote some more stuff later. However. It was the incessant complaining of people such as 'Pancreatic Juice' (ungh) that caused me to 'retire'. Enough people emailed me asking me to write some more programs that I decided to do just that. However, when a group has released no programs to speak of - how can they even say they are leaving the programming scene for a while.. when they never even entered it?

Correct yourself. Not "no programs to speak of", "little programs to speak of" =)

Hey, I respect you...if you recall, I was one of the only people who _didn't_ flame you, but instead wished you good luck. My above comment was not meant to bash your programming group. The article just happened to be unnewsworthy; that shouldn't offend you. In any case, it was immature of people to flame you guys. Maybe when you make your comeback in '00, with a good enough program(s), you'll get a better reputation from people who hate you (me not included). See you in the new millenium...

I went to your web page- bootlegged christian songs. humourous.

There was a lag between our file archives and our news staff. It took a few days to add the file, and a few days to realize that the file had been added (better communication could help, sure). Anyhow, many people do not look at the recent updates list, and we felt it was our duty to make sure that TI-83 users knew about the new shell. I bet at least one person will be glad that this article was posted.

Hey, great job, Joe! I got SOS v2.0 5 days ago!!!! I love the module support, if only they were easier to make :) I hope to develop some myself. Check out my group's webpage for info on our games and hopefully modules that will come out. Great Job Joe!! (Even though there seems to be some bugs left in it!)

hmmm... i'm glad ticalc finally noticed this rather major release... it's been out for a while at joewing.calc.org and www.calc.org. anyways, once again, good job joe.

I looked at the results from a servey, Shell Wars. Gosh, SOS should of won, but it wasn't popular then. SoS is a better operating system, and I think the servey should be redone. Also because there are more shells and stuff, think of the 86 now.

I think ticalc.org should do another shell survey that includes all the new and updated shells (SOS, YAS, etc.).

Sorry to say something, but I think the SoS is a shell, not an operating system.

If you want to be anal about it, then you're right. But the loose definition for an operating system is a program that runs other programs...a description SOS fits. Technically, no calculator shell is a _true_ operating system. The only true operating system a TI calc has is its own TI-OS. Oh, well, you can always pretend "SOS" stands for "Swap Operating Shell"...

BTW, is it my imagination, or is your smiley wearing a Santa hat?

I don't know where you're getting your definition, but it seems that you would classify DOS as a shell also. Afterall, DOS uses BIOS, similar to SOS, which uses the "TI-OS" for ROM calls.

Think for a moment about DOS. Disk Operating System. Which handles the memory the Disks, and any other hardware. Don't get me wrong, SOS does manage the memory a bit, but it doesn't manage the hardware. So please do no bash me, alright?

The TI-83 has no hardware to manage! That means the TI-OS isn't an operating system? I think not. Anyway, SOS runs programs in a totally different manner than the TI-OS. It even has library and module support. These features make SOS more than simply a shell.
A shell merely provides an interface to an already present operating system. SOS does far more than that.
I admit, in an environment where only one program runs at a time and where that program has complete control over the devices (direct input and display routines are a perfect example), the definition of operating system can get fuzzy.
