YAS v0.91 Released
Posted by Kirk on 3 May 1999, 23:57 GMT
Aaron Curtis has released Yet Another Shell (YAS) v0.91 for the TI-86. Although most features have remained static, one of the notable new features is TI-82 emulation. Many TI-82 programs may now be emulated after being converted on the computer. Most other changes were bug fixes, including better TI-85 emulation and better execution of BASIC programs.

Great shell. The 82 emulation could be much better though. How about centering the 82 screen, then blackening the 16 pixels on each side?
As for the actual 82 emulation problems, well, that's another story. For examples, external levels and games that use Joe W.'s DISPGRAPH routine don't work. In fact, I've only gotten 3 or 4 of the 20+ games I've tried to work :(
As for 85 emulation, much improved, but there appears to be a bug. On my calculator(ROM v1.3), the xvar menu doesn't seem to work. It refuses to let me select programs. Please fix this soon.

I don't remember all of them right now. Some were BoulderDash, Galaxian, Orzunoid, Pac-Man, Plain Jump, Spaze Invaders, SQRXZ, Baseball, Pong82z, Nibbles.
I know it's because some of the lesser used ROM_Call's are not supported (for examples, Nibbles/Pong82z I believe use some uncommon OP1 and OP2 romcalls, BoulderDash uses the disp apd_buf rom-call, PlainJump uses Joe W's disp routine and external levels, Galaxian/ Orzunoid/ Pacman use Patrick Davidson's display routine(maybe you don't support "call DISP_DELAY"?))
But even so 82 emulation could still be much better. If you want some help identifying more of your problems, email me personally. I'll be more than happy to help.
External levels don't work because you've added some bytes to the beginning of 82 programs that shouldn't be there.

stop bashing ase
its the most stable thing i have ever ran on my 86 w/ rom 1.3
yas crashed within 2 mins when i tried to run a basic prog i hope this new version is MUCH better
and nowhere in the news article did it say ase is unstable
it only crashes when you try to run 85 files over 10k
so if you really want those games just port them
thats what im working on so i dont need to use a shell for emulation
matt c
btw my site is still under construction
but if you want south park and simpsons sounds go to my downloads page

I don't have an 86, so I don't know really how good this shell is (and no disrespect to the author) but what about news for other _really_ good PROGRAMS such as SF2T and SMQ (which hasn't got a news item for months, and it has changed a lot since then)? IMO at least SF2T should have been newsed (excuse the verbing-LOL).

A idea

I think all the shell developers and those who have ever helped ccreate a shell should all get together and create one "Master" shell. Who needs 20+ shells for the 86? No one. And most of them are terrible, yet each has something special about them which is why people use them. My idea is to have all the shell developers develop one master shell. This will not only give everyone the best shell ever but also will give a chance for the "masters" of z80 language to show their stuff. In this master shell, it should have plug-in support and should be very small with hundreds of plug-ins. Sure it will take forever to make, but hey, what else is there to do.

the only problem i have ound with my calc. Using the new yas is whe nthe alpha function is used it doesn't exactly crash it jsut causes all the asm programs to not allow arrow key control so i can move in a game. Once it did crash. Also 85 is allmost perfect except when deadlus is runing you can't use the forward errow key. I am on rom version 1.3.

85 actual, not emulated...

So, another shell goes to the 86... they could go to the 85 and make a shell that runs on a calculator designed to run it without emulation-continue 85 development, not 86!!

Emulation Question
|
Jason
|
I was wondering if it would be possible for someone to write a shell for the 85 that would emulate 86? Or is that beyond the capabilities of the calc?
