Virtual TI-89/92(+) v1.0 Beta released
Posted on 27 December 1998, 00:35 GMT

Rusty Wagner has released Virtual TI-89/92(+) v1.0 Beta for Windows. This is an emulator for all 68k based TI calculators, which includes the TI-89, TI-92, TI-92 II, and TI-92 Plus. This emulator has many great features, here are just a few:

  • ROM versions are automatically detected
  • Switch between ROM versions without restarting the emulator
  • Archive memory support for TI-89 and TI-92 Plus
  • Send files to the calculator
  • Use a TI Graph-link cable to connect to a real TI-89 or TI-92
  • Save and load the state of the calculator. Any changes to the Flash ROM will be included in the state
  • 4-level and 7-level grayscale support
  • Bitmap of the calculator with clickable buttons

You will need a ROM dump of your calculator to use this emulator. Since it is illegal to distribute them on the Internet, you will have to dump your own. The emulator includes a built-in ROM dumper for use with a TI-89 or TI-92 Plus. If you have a TI-92, you can use one of the various ROM dummping programs on this site.

Rusty has also released the source code for his emulator program. It requires C++Builder 3 to compile.

It really sucks that I am hearing how cool this emu is, but I can't seem to get it to work! I can't find the DirectInput library (dinput.dll) to make it work. Can anybody send me this file...

It's part of DirectX which you will have to install.

Nice Work !

This emul/debugger is sooo cool. I think that a program like this will help 68k prgrammers immensely. In fact, a debugger like this one takes away every excuse that a programmer has for making stupid, buggy programs. From now on, anyone who uses this prog to make a stupid or buggy program should be tarred and feathered (myself excluded).

I don't know where the author got the idea that it will not run under Windows NT because there is no Direct Input. It works fine on my computer (Windows NT 4, SP3).

Ahh...the drawbacks of the uniqueness of computers...is Direct Input included with DirectX?

I think it is, but you can only install DirectX on computers running Windows95/98. For WindowsNT you need service pack 3 which includes DirectX 3.

i don't have NT, but everyone that i know that does say that the win95 version of dx6.1 works perfectly on nt.

I am also running NT 4 though I am up to SP5 and it works fine for me too.
Is there any way to increase the size of the window??? It's kinda dinky at high res.

This emulator works really well. It's nice to finally find something that imitates the calculators with the same speed! However, it would be cool to be able to speed up the emulation, especially to run some programs that creates fifty 3D pictures and then animate them. I can't stand waiting 30 minutes just for this...

Buy a faster computer!

Well, I think my computer is quick enough. It's a pentiumII 350, but I think that the calc would run exactly at the same speed on a P75.

I only hope the programmer is going to add a feature that would allow us to choose the speed of emulation (like emu48 did for the hp48).

Faster? Faster what?
Eugene

Faster processor? Hmm...maybe a larger processor cache? More RAM? Faster hard drive? Faster video? Or maybe you forgot to run Defrag. A faster computer can mean many different combinations of these things. (yeah, get an AMD or Cyrix processor) I wish a faster processor would solve all these speed problems, but often the quality of the hardware (sound card, grafx card, etc.) or lack thereof is to blame.

Re: Faster? Faster what?

Do you mean the emulation speed depends on the speed of the computer that runs VTI68k? (I don't think my amount of RAM or anything is to blame. I can do almost everything I want with this computer.) It would be really disappointing! I thought it was made to imitate the speed of the real calculators...
If this is the actual situation, my next computer will be too quick to use VTI! Running an hp48 at 17 times its original speed is quite hard to handle. I think it would be the same horror with a TI...

No. I was just kidding around :)

Multiple Files
paramecium

I want to send multiple files (i.e. 30 files) to my emulator. Why can't I select multiple files when I hit F10? The emulator will not receive .89g files. That sucks!

Re: Re: Multiple Files
Eugene

That sucks...still stuck with BASIC games? (no offense, but ASM games are now around) And besides, TI-Graph Link for the 89 allows you to send multiple files.

I would say ungroup the files, but then it'd take you hours to send the files, right?

By far the best freeware I've come across! TI ought to have included something like this in the box with the calculator. One minor observation:

Is it unique to my computer, or do the 2nd and diamond shift keys on the emulator not work with the x,y,z, and t keys? Can't get caps for those letters, either. (They do work using the pc keyboard's alt and ctrl keys, at least.)

Nice job.

Same problem here - are you using the ROM upgrade from TI? Anyone else having this problem?

Keyboard...
homer

I actually can't use the keyboard that is on my screen, because it doesn't do what I want it to do. For example, if I click on [3], the emulator will display 4. Or 7.

This program doesn't recognize non-american keyboards. It types everything just as if I had a qwerty, but I have an azerty... I hope this is going to be fixed in a next version, huh?

Does anyone get a CRC error when you try to open the zip file that this program is in? I tried downloading it a few times and it still is not working right.
Can someone please email me VTi68k.exe or tell me where I can get it? Thanks.

I tried again using a different browser and FTP just in case I was looking at the same file, but it still does not work. Here is the exact error:

Extracting VTi68k.exe
bad CRC 90a216d0 (should be 3c651f80)
Warning: the size of the extracted file (1464323) does not match the uncompressed size (1464320) recorded in the zip file

Any suggestions?

It's corrupted. See above.

Ok, I got the good version now, but what did you mean when you said "See above"? There was no mention that it was corrupted in any of the above messages.
And did someone upload a corrupt version AFTER they uploaded a good version? Because everyone seemed to have already used it before I downloaded the corrupt version.

I thought someone made a post earlier concerning the corruption of the exe file. That's what I meant.

And yes, it seems to me.

Try using PKunzip - it worked for me.
