New Survey Added
Posted on 8 November 1998, 18:52 GMT

A Site Wars survey has been added to the Surveys section. We have also purged our user database of people who haven't voted on any surveys. Those who have been purged may reapply if they want to vote.

The comments below are written by ticalc.org visitors. Their views are not necessarily those of ticalc.org, and ticalc.org takes no responsibility for their content.

I have two comments regarding this addition. First of all, what possible reason for this survey is there besides to start a fight? Or to "show off"? I'd love to see what ticalc will do if ticalc.org does NOT come in first :) Also, I dont think it will be a very fair vote, since this vote is ON the ticalc.org site. Had this vote been on Dimension-TI or TI-Files, there probably would have been a much different outcome. Better yet, there should be a vote like this on a page that is NOT in the running.

My intelligent contribution: Shut up, it's just a survey.

Hey Kirk, I thought you weren't interested in calcs anymore. I heard you took up writing weird poems or something odd like that. Anyway if your back, start making those good games again.

As some people may remember, TI-Files DID have this exact same survey on their own site a few weeks ago...not surprisingly, TI-Files won.

The purpose of this survey is to see what people coming to our site think. There has been a similar survey on ti-files, and we want to see what the results would be on our site. The independent survey in existence at TI-Central is good, but they don't get the volume that TI-Files, ticalc.org, and Dimension-TI get. No poll on the internet is scientific. Mostly, they are just for fun.

Re: New Survey Added

Who cares what site wins?!?! We dont visit these sites to pay homage or anything! We just need to get software. Any ol page can do that. And if you really come here to read the reviews, read the cal specs, or fill out silly messages not unlike this one, go find something more worthwhile to do!

There was a similar survey on the Ti-Files, yes, and I think that they won in the polls because it was their site. I chose to not vote at all on that one because I couldnt pick TI-Files because I know I like 'ticalc.org' more, but I didnt say 'ticalc.org' at all because the people at the TI-Files would like Ban my ass from everything, or whatever... I do still check the TI-Files sometimes, when 'ticalc.org' is having a slow week... (like they just did before this new news about a survery). I think that 'ticalc.org' will emerge supreme in this survey because it is their site that theyre hosting it on (besides the fact of just being better...) =P

Surveys?
InFuZeD

Hrmmmm...IMHO surveys are useless, especially if you already know the outcome. I can see having a voting place for program of the month but the rest is useless. Just my thoughts =P

Why not have a survey somewhere and link to it from all the major ti sites, so it is scientific. Or if this is not good, do a survey on each and compile the results.

I had thought about this when I wrote my last reply. I think it would be the most fair way of doing it, but it would probably spark more rivalry. Also, I doubt all the sites would be willing to do this. And who would decide which sites were involved? If everyone REALLY cared what everyone else thought about the major sites then there would be a need for this, but I dont think people care that much.

Exactly, whats the point? I can see if ppl wanted a survey about this stuff but I think it's dumb.
How about a survey about keeping the survey? j/k =)

There should be a TI-Site survey where people write in a vote for best non-major TI site(ie NOT ticalc.org, www.ti-files.org, or calc.ml.org). That way people actually benefit from the vote by gaining knowledge about what are some good non-main stream sites like the Icarus Productions page.

I think the survey should be about the best non-ticalc site (the only fair way to do it).

Of course that's completely fair... that's why ticalc.org doesn't want to do it :)

Re: Re: Re: New Survey Added

Yeah that would. Of course, you would then have to omit DIM-TI and TI-Files to be fair to ticalc.org. Then leave the contest to the "little guys".

What I meant, and what I think Thriller meant, was since the vote is on ticalc.org, then other sites would be included in the vote. Of course people coming to ticalc would vote for ticalc, but they probably dont have as much of a weighted opinion in reference to the other sites. If the vote were on ti-files, then dim-ti and ticalc.org would be in the vote. I'm not saying I think this should happen, I'm just clarifying the original idea.

Okay, everybody wants to fight over how "unfair" it is for ticalc.org to have this survey here. The same applies to the TI-Files' similar survey. Here's what you do. ticalc.org and TI-Files, just this once, lauch a cooperative survey on a third site. Both sites link to the third and invite everybody to go there and cast a vote for their favorite. Only then can we know that we have all the die-hard ticalc.org fans and all the die-hard TI-Files fans voting in the same place. Oh, yeah. Throw Dimension-TI in there, too, even though they are the smaller of the "big players". If you really do this, you can also make a second tally, nominate and vote for your favorite non-"big three" site. This list can include 86 Central, Techno-Plaza, etc.
I've seen several attempts at something like this, but it can only work with both ticalc.org and the TI-Files behind it. If you're going to agree to disagree, you can at least do this together, if only for final bragging rights to the most popular TI site.

Re: Re: New Survey Added
ticalc_chris

The survey is really so we can get the opinions of our visitors, many of whom, in this case, also tend to visit other "major" TI sites. The questions are posed such that we can find out what people like best about our site and about other sites they visit.

An impartial poll of which is the most popular site wouldn't do anybody any good except for inflating some egos. Not to mention that for people to find the third party poll, it would have to be advertised on sites like ours, and different approaches to advertising would very likely affect the breakdown of who votes in the third party poll, defeating the purpose of having it off-site anyway. Don't sweat it too much. As Andy said, we're not trying to be scientific, just to get a rough idea.
