CLEM Teams Up to Create Mosaic Shell
Posted on 20 September 1998, 01:07 GMT

[Mosaic Shell Screenshot]
After reading Philip Gossling's article Creating the Ultimate GUI, CLEM has teamed up with Philip to create Mosaic Shell for the TI-86. CLEM will be doing the programming and Philip the artwork and design. The shell will have the follow features:

  • 6 customizable program groups
  • Icons
  • Rename, hide, compress, delete, and move programs
  • TI-BASIC program descriptions and icons
  • Memory locking
  • TI-82, TI-83, and TI-85 emulation
  • RAM Explorer
  • On-calc icon editor
  • Component support (like plug-ins)

Is this just "Dynamic Shell" renamed to "Mosaic Shell", or is it something new? Is the Dynamic shell still in beta, or will the beta testers get another shell to test? SOMEONE please answer these questions!!! OKTEAM@IONET.NET are you LISTENING????

hey all u guys!! Stop pressuring him so much or he might get angry and not do it at all. Well anyway, how about the 24 hour clock which would go into this shell.

Muad~Dip

I think this looks like a great shell. I am looking forward to Maze3D, and I think this will be the best shell yet. I like the idea of being able to turn icons on or off, and PLEASE keep working on this 4 the TI-86, That is what I have, and I don't plan on getting an 89 soon...

Leave CLEM alone guys, let him do the programing, DON'T BUG HIM!!!

STOP THE INSANITY!!! Listen to all of you..nitpicking EVERY SINGLE THING...it's insane... "my calculator is better than your calculator" "finish the other stuff!"... bubbles i don't want to burst my friends, and i feel as strongly about this as you all do, but... they're just calculators...and it's just a shell...and there'll be more after this one. And stop bragging about the 89 and 92...it makes us with the lower numbers feel bad..!

I think that this shell is a good idea, but there is one thing though, all of those people who have tweaked there calculators and try to run either the programs or the shells have seen that they don't always meat up, like I have boosted my ti-86 and now it runs about 2-3 faster but I had experienced some problems with shells and asm programs that were strange and caused a crash. So it would be really nice to have a shell that would support all of those TI's, like to be able to slow or see what speed the calc is running and other things. I also think that sound would be a nice thing although not necessary.

Interesting Obsevation....
Leon Pierr
(Web Page)

Has anyone noticed that the Windows 2000 shell page has the same screen shots as those posted by Philip in his article and the one that Clem and Philip are using for the shell. I wonder how this could have happened.... could HackNiN be stealing shots...no, that can't be it, it would be dishonest... I wonder what the story is.....
anyway, this is the page, last I checked:

Re: Interesting Obsevation....
tenalibabu

U've got a good point, it is similar but i am sure he changed a lot of those shots they look similar but there are differences. This whole idea of calculator programming is based on what the programmers have seen and what they want. So we really can't blame anybody. The least thing somebody can do is give them credit. On the windows 2000 page the guy said that those ideas weren't completely his. So instead of turning on our programmers , we need to help them by means of beta testing , ideas and support on other things.

thanx

CLEM and I noticed this just yesterday. When I wrote my article, I said anyone could use the ideas I mentioned. When I wrote it HAckNIN was making win2k and I guess he liked my ideas so he's using some of them. That is fine with me. Mosaic shell has been revised from the shell presented in the article, so it won't be exactly what you see in the article. I encourage HackNiN to continue his shell and put his own unique touch to it.

Great Idea, CLEM! I love your Maze3d program, btw. One question... How long will the shell take to be ready?
I am using Rascall right now, but I want Mosaic!
Can I be a Beta tester?

89, 92+ people, Who cares if you have more mem?
The 86 Rocks, and you people are making us 86 users
feel bad! Hey, I shouldn't be talking, I have a 92
and will be getting an 89 soon...

One more thing... Don't leave out 83 users! It may only
have 32k, but It is capable of doing much of what the
86 can do! Let's see maybe a lite version of mosaic for the 83.

Keep up the good work on Maze3d, Clem!

Calculator Icons
Alex Lash

Icons on the 86 are, IMHO, very practical. The 86, as I understand, does not use the RAM model of the 82,3,and 5 which require free memory space to execute ASM. The 86 has 10K reserved out of the "real" 128K for ASM which is both a great strength and a GAPING flaw. On the 82, if I have only 300 bytes free and I try and run Dying Eyes, it crashes hard and fast with memory errors and/or lockups. The 86 runs fine with only 300 bytes left with the exception of BASIC and TI-OS usage. The 89 and 83 do this, but the 83 has too little memory and the 89 is out of the price range of the casual user/student, as is the 92. The 96K of user memory is really excellent considering the low size of most progs. I look forward to the public beta of this shell!

I'm not familiar at all with the 68k processor, does it have a limitation on memory like the z80 does?

When will this shell be done??
josh savoy
(Web Page)

I have a TI-86, looking for a better shell, and this shell looks like the best so far, but it is not out yet. When will it be done? I think the 89 and above are 100% useless. Don't you think? Math is something that you need to know. With the 89 and beyond, it does everything for you.....which makes math just about 100% easier. But what do you learn when you just type everything into a calculator........not a thing.

     24 September 1998, 03:09 GMT

Re: You''ve got a really good point
tenalibabu

Math is something we do need to know! But when people write math programs for these calculators it really helps them out becuase it is a review for them but all the others who use those math programs are screwed cuz they will be dependent on it(well not everybody). Sometimes i feel obligated to use my calc when doing simple problems, but still it is like a security thing.

By the way the best shell out right now (at least that's what I think) is Rascall. It can play most of the 85's popular games and has many other cool features. Download it!!!!

The 92+
Matt

Hey, i love the idea about this shell...one question though...can you make a shell that will be the same and run on the 92+? I wanna see this thing, but since it doesn't exist yet, and I don't have an 86, i'm outta luck...unless you can make it for the 92+. Keep up the good work!

Re: CLEM Teams Up to Create Mosaic Shell
MERCK Geoffrey

Hey guys!...
I think you should all stop asking for ports to the 68k series because there are enough good progies out there for this one. the problem is that many good programmers when they have made good work an small calcs buy a better one and leave the old one... I think it would be great if someone would code a crosscompiler: you write your ASM file and you'll get a 82/83/85/86 prog
But there will still be the screen size problem...

And please STOP BUGGING GOOD PROGRAMMERS OR THEY WONT PROGRAMM ANYTHING!...

tenalibabu

Hey it's survival of the fittest, that's how this works. Too bad!! I have a 86 and soon interest will shift towards 89. I can't do anything about it. We can just hope someone can come up with a universal emulator for all calcs. Yes I know!! Pixels are the problem!!

Re: CLEM Teams Up to Create Mosaic Shell
Farkle Master

It would be great to have this for all good TI-calcs(Ti-82,83,85,86 and, 89). I have a TI-85 and 86 and was kinda wandering when this shell could be expected! Thatnks CLEM!!!!!!!!

WinCE like features
Josh Reichard
(Web Page)

I would like to see CLEM formulate Mosaic around a Windows CE-type interface. From the screen shots that I have seen already, this should not be terribly painstaking. Since CE is slowly becoming an industry standard in the Handheld PC market, why not project the standards to the TI-86? If it could just have a taskbar, start menu, and desktop icons, I think that everyone would be very pleased... of course, all of this would be optional according to the user.
