Planned Downtime on Thursday
Posted on 14 September 1998, 18:35 GMT

This Thursday, the 17th, the site will be inaccessible from 20:00 to 20:30 GMT while some work is done on the power supply at the server's location. If all goes as planned, the downtime should be brief. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks, I'll probably be back from school by then, get out at about 1:30, and I'm in MDT. I'll try and see if it's up. If not, oh well, I'll just try again later.

Well, we hope to make it faster. Hopefully, it will not be more than a couple of minutes. However, one should never count on things not to go wrong - usually something does.

Just out of curiousity, what's wrong with the power supply?

First of all, the replacement is now complete, and the total downtime was well under 30 minutes.
Second, the reason we replaced the power supply was this. It was the last step in isolating all the power supplies to central SolNET equipment (including the ticalc.org server) from the rest of the power in the building. This will get us away from the people messing around in the electrical system, and making mistakes all the time.
We now have a completely own power supply coming in, and we are looking at the possibility of a diesel generator to handle longer power failures.

Good Luck! I own and maintain a web server, i understand the hard work that goes into mantaining and financing one! Hope all goes well for you.
Do you use APC UPS's?

No, we use Fiskars. In the central router/switch room, we have a stack of 3 small (600VA) UPSes, all of them older model Fiskars.
