File Information Pages
Posted on 5 September 1998, 14:39 GMT
File Information pages have been added for every file in our File Archives. To access these pages, just click on the icon next to each file. This will bring up a page with the following infomation: - Title
- Filename
- Archive
- Author name & e-mail
- Size
- Time of last update
- Source code (yes/no)
- Documention (yes/no)
- Description
- Screenshots (if any)
- Archive contents
Currently, only most of the TI-92 screenshots are done. We will be working to get the rest completed over the next few weeks. We expect to have approximately 6000 screenshots. Also, look for more information to be displayed on these pages in the future.

Number of Downloads

I think it would be really neat if you could add an item that would show how many times the program had been downloaded. If it was in the top ten most popular programs downloaded, there would be some sort of graphic indicating that. Another completely different section could be made with the top ten/one hundred programs downloaded.
The only way I can suggest to do that is to somehow write a CGI that would interpret your web server statistics page and have it mark the number of downloads for each file appropriately. I don't know if that's within the capability of the database software that you're using to manage the archives. As an alternative, if the number can't be written directly to the program info page, you could have it link to a page which lists the stats for a whole section (For instance, 86/ASM/GRAPHICS/ might have a whole page for it which is just generated at midnight.)
Anyways, that's just on the wishlist. I think this new improvement to the archives is great. I'm looking forward to the screenshots.

One other small suggestion: when you make a link to a program on the main page, you could have it link to the info page instead of the actual zipfile. Or, alternatively, have info in parentheses and have that as a seperate link.

While we are on the topic of bettering ticalc...would it be possible to implement some way of showing times of events: upload time... release time...in terms of clients timezone? You could make a registration page where you find out information about us, the users, and use that information to better taylor the site to the users(such as timezones...areas of interest...calcs you use..whatever) Store all this info in a cookie or something? Just a suggestion...it would be really sweet though!

ticalc.org Member Database

Ticalc.org should have a member database that works kind of like the News Posting. You can enter your name in the database and the date the entry was submitted or updated. You could give info on your current project, programs written, if your're a beta tester, player, programmer, or artist. and include screenshots of artwork or your latest game. Also your webpages and e-mail. This would make team programming easier and you would have a better idea of exactly who visits this site.

Thank you, TiCalc staff! We've desparately needed this! :)
Now, as this goes on, i'm sure it will be refined. For us programmers who want to know how our programs are doing, (and for some bandwagon advertisement strategies) could you put a "total hits" per file? That way we would know how many ppl are actually getting our files, or what ones are actually popular.
Thanks.
