Interactive News System
Posted on 27 July 1998, 20:31 GMT

As our regulars will notice, we've just replaced our old news items section with a new, dynamic news system.

From now on, we'll be posting more news items of interest to the community, and our visitors are invited to respond to each article and to each other. Click the "comments" link below an article to read the current discussion and make a contribution.

For more information about the news system, click the "comments" link below this article and read on. We invite your feedback to news@ticalc.org.

We hope this goes over well. One thing we'd like to stress: do not abuse this feature. Please keep flames elsewhere. In case anyone is interested in the internals of the new system, it was written from scratch in-house using perl and a PostgreSQL database. As a model, we used the concept that has worked well at Slashdot.org, a "nerd" news site. We may decide to make the source available at some point in the future.

From what I've seen (browsing the comments), it looks like this could be a something big. The comments for several articles are looking like miniature discussion groups - someone asks a Q, someone else gives an A, and some third guy tells them why you don't ever need to know the answer ;)

Seriously, though, this means that ticalc.org potentially has the largest, most dynamic Calculator discussion group on the Internet. Almost every day, at least one new subject gets thrown into the group, and from a neutral source.

I believe this is a great resource to all TI Calculator owners, and I hope everybody behaves themselves ;)

This is cool! It was depressing to visit this site after a week and find that nothing has changed on the news page. Good work.
