This “Pac Man” clone is great. Not that it is original, but it is a great game. You can also change the settings, which adds variety. The graphics are also very good; there are even bonus fruits! This is a great game for arcade fans.

Controls: 9/10
Memory: 9/10
Usage: 9/10
Overall: 9/10 a great clone

Attention span: 7/10 A quick game now and then.
Controls: 9/10 Easy to learn, good control overall
Implementation: 8/10 Not for the classic purist.
Overall: 8/10 A good game with minor issues.

Pac-Man '99 is a game you can look at in two ways: being or not being a good game, and being or not being a faithful clone of the original Pac-Man. How you look depends on what kind of game you are expecting.

Pac-Man '99 is a clone of the classic game Pac-Man, where you were a yellow character shaped like a pizza with a slice taken out of it who would go through a maze eating dots. While you were doing this, you would be chased by ghosts, and your ultimate goal was to eat all of the dots in the maze without being caught by one of these ghosts. There were power pellets, which allowed you to become the hunter instead of the hunted. The ghosts turned blue and tried avoiding you for a certain amount of time, and you could eat them during this time.

Pac-Man '99 follows these basics of the classic very well, putting you in a maze with ghosts. You run through mazes, eat dots, dodge ghosts, eat power dots followed by a ghost or two, you get the idea. There is a config menu where you can choose the number of ghosts (three or four) and the speed of the game (slow or fast). It's the simple run, eat, dodge formula that made the original Pac-Man a classic.

If you're looking for a port of the original arcade game, though, this game isn't for you. The ghost movement isn't true to the original, and in some cases it isn't very good overall. You can stop your player without hitting a wall, there's no central box the ghosts start from or return to when eaten, no classic maze remakes, no suddenly-appearing fruit, things like that.

However, if you're looking for a general Pac-Man clone, though, this game has few problems and is a well-written game. The main problem I see is that when you eat a power dot, it is hard to see if you can still eat the ghosts (they change from solid-colored ghosts to half-colored ghosts and it's hard to see when they change back.) Also, your character could've been animated when eating the dots, and better ghost AI wouldn't be a bad idea, but it's still a good game. There's no actual errors that I can find, and the game is quite enjoyable. Controls are good, and the save-in-progress feature (hit DEL during a game) is a good idea. I recommend this game to anyone looking for a good Pac-Man clone for the TI-83.

I was very disappointed when I first played this game. It is fast, and the ghosts and Pac-Man himself look very good, but I feel that it fails to capture the sense of the original Pac-Man. Each level looks almost exactly like the others (straight lines for walls, no "scenery", and the configurations are all nearly identical), there is no fruit or anything like that for bonuses, and the ghosts hang in the center of the level, making it too easy to get the outer dots and near impossible to get the center dots without a power-up. It's also near impossible to lure the ghosts out of the center, since they move the same speed as you (they are supposed to move slower), except on turns, when they move faster. Over all, I would not recommend this game unless you have almost nothing on you calculator and you're desperate to fill it up.

Gameplay - 4/10 (not too good)
Graphics - 5/10 (mediocre)
Speed - 10/10 (outstanding)
Over all - 5.5/10 (mediocre+)

”Pac-Man 99” is an excellent representation of the TI-83's ability to recreate arcade games almost to perfection. This version of “Pacman” runs very fast and has superb graphics. The levels are very challenging, with a classic look. There are the temporary invisibility, power-ups and enemy ghosts. This is a must have for anyone's calculator!
