Attention span: 9/10 It doesn't just go away.
Controls: 10/10 Couldn't be better.
Implementation: 10/10 See above.
Overall: 10/10 Wow.

It's been quite a while since there has been a full version calculator game that has truly delivered both quality graphics and gameplay, the latest of which has been "Super Mario Quest" in late 1999. "Solar Striker" is no different in that sense, and will most definitely become a classic game for the 89.

Did I mention before that the graphics are unbelievable for this relatively low level technology? Well they are. I'll probably be comparing this game to SMQ quite a bit as it is a surefire "Program of the Month". Gameplay stands up well to the graphics, complimented well by nice control and smooth animation speeds. But don't get me wrong the game is not easy at all. Most beginners probably won't make it past the first level for quite some time.

Be sure to thank Brian Tribondeau and Benoit Scherrer for this awesome game. This sort of thing takes months, and sometimes years of hard work and dedication. People such as these are hard to find. Thanks again.

Attention span: 6/10 You get destroyed fairly quickly.
Controls: 10/10 Nothing but what you'd expect.
Implementation: 9/10 Awesome graphics and playability.
Overall: 8/10 It is superb, especially for v0.13.

For a game that is so early in production, I was extremely impressed with Solar Striker. The graphics are simply astounding. The fact that the animation is so detailed and smooth, definitely makes this game a worthy download. Even though it is still in its alpha version, I cannot see what has to be improved. You could easily mistake it for a full version. Let me get into the game itself though. If your thinking that this game is like Pheonix, another great shoot'em up for the TI-89, they are not at all alike. You are a ship that is flying through the sky, over clouds. The ship you control is completely mobile, you can move it anywhere on the screen. Enemies do not come in big groups like in Phoenix, but rather, one by one. This makes the game a greater challenge because the individual enemies are far more manuverable and harder to kill. As for now, there is only one ship you can play and only one type of gun you can shoot. I dont know what the author's plans are in expanding this (or any other) aspect of the game, so this could remain the same in the final version anyway. There are a good amount of enemies that you can face, each one individually and superbly animated, and each with a different type of attack as well.

The game's difficulty, for now at least, is extremely high. I can't even get 30 seconds into the game before an insanely hard wave of enemies sweeps down and pummels me. And since it is the alpha version, you only have 1 life to work with. There is no real point system or high score system implemented as of yet (not even a title screen), so the replay value is not to high, unless you want to just keep trying your luck with those impossible enemies I just mentioned.

As I mentioned previously, I have absolutely no idea what the future plans are for this game. However, I noticed that what made Phoenix so popular was the idea of being able to add upgrades to your ship. I think it would be very wise of the author to implement this sort of technique. It worked for Phoenix; I have had the game for months and I play it practically every day (I admit it, I am a Phoenix addict). Other than that suggestion, I don't see why the author couldn't just slap on a title page with a highscore table and release the game tommorow; it's that advanced. I really could not believe that it was such an early version. Download this game, it is outstanding for v.13 and I can't wait to see what the author does with it in the future.
