V-Factor is a great example of a good BASIC game! You control a line (snake?) and must avoid the randomly generated dots. Unlike most other BASIC games I've seen, the graphics are decent (no text-based graphics, no flickering) and it runs at a good speed. Key response is also very good - better than some assembly games! The only problems are that generating the dots at the beginning of each level can take a while, and the levels take up only one screen. Still, the levels get hard starting at 7, so that makes up for the length.
I've looked at the source, and it's very well written - nice and efficient, completely contained in one file, needing only a list variable to hold the high score, with no long label names or unneeded variables. It also cleans up after itself, not leaving the graph screen or delete menu a mess.
Altogether, I would give this game rating of 8 out of 10. It will keep you entertained, and is worth a download (I keep it on my calculator). |
