This game kept me amused for all of the five minutes it's worth.
1. The AI is horrible, falling for the simplest foolsmate. (checkmate in 4 moves?!) Also, it doesn't understand how to checkmate. (It's more material-oriented)
2. There is no difference between amateur and beginner except that one of them has a purposely inserted pause between each move.
3. The CPU priority is useless. After setting it to each mode and making the same moves, the AI didn't make one different choice.
4. The figurine mode has pawns that are dots and squares that are dots...the stauton mode has extremely similar pawns and bishops...and the alphabet has hard-to-see diagonals.
5. It won't work in Mirage OS!
6. The abilities of the program itself are questionable. Sometimes it won't let me move a piece even though doing so won't put my king in check.
However, because this game is the only one of its kind on the TI-83, I would rate it an overall 25/40. |

First, this is the best chess game Ive ever played. It actually has an AI! And the AI is actually hard to beat. There are also different difficulties.
But there are a few bad things about this game. First some of the controls are messed up. And the knight is an H, It should be an N or something. It also resets my memory once and a while.
This game is still really cool and challenging. This is a must download for people who want to test their mental abilities.
Controls-8/10 Mess up sometimes Memory-7/10 Medium sized Usage-10/10 Fun and challenging Overall-8/10 Fun and challenging |

By far, Chessmaster is the best chess game for the TI-83 Plus series. But there are some gripes that I have about it. It's not compatible with MirageOS right after you download it. It's easily fixed, but if you're not a programmer, even a n00b one, you'll get confuddled and just download Ion to run it.
It's fantastic that there are three graphic sets; it's more than anyone else would bother to do, but the Alpha set has an H for the knight. It's supposed to be an N. Castling doesn't follow all the rules; there's no en passant; and you can't get to the bottom of the menu from the top, but you can vice-versa. Again, all of this is easily fixed, though. The AI can do dumb things sometimes, but it's still the best out there. I use this program all the time - it's really top-notch. |

Chessmaster 83 is the best chess program for the TI 83+. It looks great, the AI is okay (it tended to throw pieces away), and it didn't swallow up my whole archive. There are heaps of customization options as well. Although the only set that was easy to make out was the Staunton set, it's a great idea. Also, being able to make your opponent play aggressively or defensively is rather novel. I would like to see an opening book implemented, even a small one, so that the AI didnt necessarily make terrible moves so early in the game.
Overall, I'd give this 8/10. |

Chessmaster is the bestchess game for the 83/4(+/SE) series. It's very entertaining to watch the computer play against itself.
Flaws: The game won't play in MirageOS for me (I had to load Ion to play). The game has a chance of entering an infinite loop when the game is computer vs. computer.

Chessmaster 83 is by far the best chess game for the TI-83+(SE). Featuring an incredible title screen and a wide selection of options, this game is incredible.
With two difficulties, the AI can be quite intelligent! I still am not quite able to beat the harder difficulty. You can also play a two-player game, select the calculator's color and characteristics (when playing against the AI), change between 3 chess sets, and more! It is just incredible. Also, you can quit a game at any time and return to it when you re-enter the program!

This is a chess game that is hard for me to beat, even on the easiest settings.
Im not a chess-pro, but most chess games I can beat in a snap-bad AI, maybe? The AI in Chessmaster 83 is outstanding and excellent; they are as if you were playing a high-class chess player on the other side of your TI 83+ (SE). Even thought the AI may make some stupid mistakes a tenth of the time playing, they will plan against you by having these traps which make you say "oh fiddle sticks (or something of the part). --------------------------------- AI//Gameplay//Replay Value: 10/10 --------------------------------- For graphics, sometimes its hard to see the black pawns when on the figure chessboard, but on the other two (sauton and alphabet), its easy to make out all chess pieces. Though the pieces are rather pixilated (calculator's graphic engine), Mr. Williamson put the greatest amount of detail to actually make them out. I think that the graphics could be slightly improved, though. -------------- Graphics: 9/10 -------------- Overall, I would think that this game will stay on your calculator for a long time, unless you simply don't like chess games. The AI is stunning and tricky, the graphics are superb for a calc game, and everything else that you can find out for yourself is great! -------------- Overall: 10/10 |

At last! A chess program with an AI engine (first one I ever saw for the TI-83+!), and a good-looking interface too! It is very user-friendly, because is very easy to move your pieces in the game, the interface is plain to understand, and the start menu is also easy to operate. Great work on the AI, of course. Beginners will have a hard time beating it. Nice work! |

I liked this one. It has so many options that I found myself, a poor chess player, sitting and playing a game. I like how you don't need two players to play this one, and I like how you can fix the AI to beginner or advanced, and then choose the AI's style of play. However, being the novice I am at chess I still found the Beginner difficulty too hard. I also noted that at the end of the AI turn the icon that clicks on the pieces remains on the enemy piece last touched, so it takes a while to play.

This game is incredible. The first time I saw it in the archives, I actually couldn't believe it. First off, I would like to say that this AI is actually quite good if you're a beginner or novice. It took a few tries for me to beat it. The graphics look great, and there are three chess sets to choose from. Its all very organized with one menu where you can set all the options. You can even save your game! Basically, this game is all it claims to be and more. Besides, its pretty much the only chess with AI for the TI-83 plus.
Gameplay: 10
Graphics: 9
Ease of Use: 10
AI: 8
Note: This game will only work in ION (It doesn't show up in MirageOS) unless you Hex-Edit the BB-60 in the beginning of the game into a BB-6D. |
