Attention span: 7/10 It had me for a while. Controls: 7/10 Sometimes perfect isn't enough. Implementation: 5/10 Imitates TRON, other BASI Nibbles.
Overall: 8/10 Good neat job.
Nibbles Arcade is a collection of three games of Nibbles. The first game is one player only and the tail length never increases. The second game has a smaller screen area. And the third is 2 player mode.
The first game plays very smoothly. Because the tail length never increases, the game is very consistent as far as speed goes. The second game is played on only a small area on the screen to make room for some graphics, the authors name, and version number, all displayed too large to justify. As you eat food in this game you grow larger. The larger you get, the slower the game goes, but its almost unnoticeable. This game does not go as smoothly as the first. The third game is 2 player head-to-head, apparently, but it bears a striking resemblance to 'TRON'. I found this game disfunctional.
The attention span for the games was high, and as the author boasts, it almost seems like assembly. The key response is not (and cannot be) perfect, forcing you to choose your change in direction a fraction of a second before the worm appears at the pixel where you want it to turn.
This program is poorly implemented, I believe, because of its (poor) imitation of other games (TRON and other BASIC Nibbles). However, the program did accomplish its task: playable version of a game that has been only been playable with assembly.
The games seem to be as fast as can be in BASIC. I personally would go for an assembly version, but if you are set on going with BASIC, (which is a good move if you don't want any risk of a crash) this is the program for you. |
