Good idea.
The only cable worth the trouble building is the serial one imo.
I used to struggle a lot with the parallell. It had such a nice "easy" 
design, so ofcourse I wanted to build it.
I don't know how many hours I have wasted on it. And when it works, it 
only works with a few programs.
Then I tried the serial. Just very little more soldering, and it worked 
perfectly on the first try and has worked since.
Plus it works with almost all software that exists, including TI:s own.
