Not many retail stores carry them because there isn't that much of a demand,
or at least there didn't used to be. So you have to mail-order one instead.

How would you know what it costs them to make a Link? TI's Graph Link has a
circuit inside to make it compatible with PCs and Macs. They also have to
pay people to engineer this thing and then support it later with the link
software. The $5 link you made is a low-quality hack job that is little
more than two wires stuck in the proper connectors. Sure it still works,
but it's a Yugo where TI's Graph Link is a Ford or something.
