I had the same problem, and after three hours I fnally figured out that while
it 'said' that it had put the kernel on the backup, it hadn't really, because
(being a linux user) I typed blah=c:/blah, instead of c:\ like DOS does.
I'll bet you any money that if it said it put the backup on, and didn't, your
problem is that you mistyped those two lines in autoexec.
