Re: A92: TI-92: Comments & Questions

Well, it goes something like this. While it is true that we
hold a commanding lead in US market share, that is not the
case worldwide. We are in a tight struggle for market share
in other countries where price seems to be more of a factor
than quality. And since US patents don't necessarily hold
water across the globe (i.e. someone could pirate our design
legally, despite the fact that it is patented), we try to release
as little of that information as possible. In other words, we
don't want to make it easy for someone like Casio to benefit
from our research and market development and clone a 92
to sell in other countries cheaper than we (if you don't have
to spend years developing it, you can sell it for less). With
the advent of FLASH, we are making it possible to reveal
more of the calc's internals without compromising security.
So we are thinking about you guys, it's just that we also
have to make prudent business decisions. As the FLASH
technology matures, who knows what we'll be able to do?
