Well, it looks like I get to answer my own question :)

After much experimentation, I found out that you can change the file type 
that is displayed in the "var-link" screen by putting something like this at 
the end of a variable:

dc.b 0,"New",0,$f8

This will display "New" for the file type in the "var-link" screen and 
display "OTHER" in doors.

Hope this is useful to someone out there... It is for me :)
