The only thing the toshiba manual says about the test mode is:
"This selects the test mode. Do not use this command." :)
It is probably only for testing at the factory.
maybe some pins get redefined, and it takes power from the backup battery
(that can explain why it is still on when you remove the battery)
the reason it doesn't crash is that the program is perfectly valid and 
returns to the tios directly.
it is no crash, just fuckup of the lcd.
