Boot ---- Ian Melnick Version 1.1 Build 14 Released 9/4/00 What is Boot? ------------- Boot is a program that works together with TI's startup application**. It offers: * Owner Identification * Password Protection * Restoration of Graph Settings * Animation Newly added features for Boot 1.1: * Response to Enter Key on startup if you don't want to wait for the indicator to reach the end * Theif protection: If you have a smart theif who knows how to quit/break the program, "This calculator has been stolen" will appear in string 9. If you know who the theif is, this can help prove it The only downside is that if anything did exist in string 9 it will be erased... :(. Your strings 1 and 2 will also be used throughout program execution, so be aware! On startup, a screen will be displayed showing your name (changeable through source code). After the startup screen has cleared, the program will prompt you for a password which is ONLY changeable through the source code (security reasons... see below). By default, the program is protected and thus cannot be edited on the calculator. If you ever forget your password, the easiest thing to do is break the program and remove it.*** The default password which boot 1.1 comes with is "0.-" without quotes. Oh yea, and the - is the negative number sign, NOT the minus key. Boot makes use of DRAW and modifies your graph's FORMAT. One nice thing about Boot that I haven't seen on other progs like it is that it stores your previous graph settings in variables and then after the program is finished, Boot restores them. If you're lazy like me, this will come in handy. The progress bar animation which serves no purpose other than to be fancy and smart-looking, was made by Dave Browne, alpaca2500@freewwweb.com. I modified one of the coordinates though to make the progress bar's box look right (on my TI-83 Plus it was hanging over the side, now it looks like a box. If it comes out looking weird on your calculator, please let me know what model you have and when you purchased it. If you have a TI-83+ that you purchased before July 2000 then I know that my calc is defective!). If you make any changes to the source code, that's fine with me, but if you plan on distribution, please give me credit where credit should be given. You might also want to check with Dave if you do anything with his progress bar :-) PS - if you don't understand that you have to modify the password from the source code, let me explain: You can't change the password from the program's interface. You just can't. Get over it. :). Since the program is protected so that someone can't view the password by editing the source code (and I fixed the bug where they could view it by looking at your strings), the only way to change the password is to re-install the program, editing it within the link software. **You can download it from the TI.com site under the free downloads section. ***I have not come across any other password programs that block the user from breaking out. So alas, if you have a smart theif, it will quickly be hacked. If you know of a way of disabling the break function, please notify me immediately (see contact below). Contact me at ibusiness1@home.com
