you can read the pins directly on a plain serial port on a pc too.
Not all os:es are very keen to let you do this though, need special 
privileges. (root/Administrator/whatever)
But that is not really a big deal, just a bit more steps to take in the 
beginning and special dll:s to install or special rights on the executable.
