The interface to the memory device in an expander is really a trivial point
of the implimentation, presuming that the chosen microcontroller as ample IO
(trivial unless you use something with a non-trivial interface, like a
harddrive.  Typical serial memory devices use SPI or I2C, code for which is
usually easily available for most any microcontroller platform).

Since it is not currently possable to expand the addressable memory of the
TI, expanders simply act as a repository for things such as games, which
tend to take up large amounts of memory.

A driverless expander can also be useful for recovering from
teacher-enforced memory clearing before tests in schools (in general this
should be done AFTER the test :) )
