the reason is hardware compression on your modem. if you try sending a text
file that compresses well, you can get unreasonably fast speeds. Try making
a file that's totally empty- just null characters, but LOTS of them. Then
send it. It will compress to almost nothing. It'll send the whole file at
what appears to be hundreds of K per second. We used to fill up BBS's that
way, just fill up their whole HD.
