With regard to remote controls using IrDA:
Well, I know for a fact that it is possible to use the infrared port on CE
devices to control regular remote control devices (TVs, VCRs, etc.). There
exist programs to do this, but none exists for the MIPS R4000 CPU. I am
doing this more for the fun and experience of it - if I ever finish it I
will probably make the program freeware including the source.

For the mean time, I appreciate all the help everybody has provided me with.
