TI-H: SLED is...

SLED is an acronym that stands for Statewide Library Electronic Doorway
or something similar. Originally (and still is) free (but limited)
dial-up acsess to the 'net that included various directories specific to
Alaska and its libraries on the front page. It's mostly a lynx browser,
but if you do the right stuff, you can also do telnet and e-mail. You
can also telnet to sled.alaska.edu and it is like you've dialed it up.
More recently, they've targeted their front page with all the
directories as a portal for Alaskans, that they acseess from their
SLIP/PPP accounts so they can see the fancy graphics. Herein lies the
confusion (I think). It is both an ISP of sorts, and a web page. I
don't know what bearing this has on Grant's site, but maybe you can only
get there using SLED's server (ie, you must telnet to SLED so that you
have their IP adress). I don't know if this last part is correct, but I
hope this really long-winded explanation helped at all.
