Connect 1->1, 2->2 etc... but pairs 1,2 3,6 4,5 7,8 should be twisted,
this could be your problem with 100mbs and/or a long cable.

What chipset's in the computer? I've heard of similar problems using VIA
MVP chipset motherboards, if you've got one of them hop on www.viatech.com
and grab a new 'IRQ routing miniport driver'.
