no need for a pic or a pc board. a couple of transistors, maybe an op-amp
set up as a Schmitt trigger would do the trick just fine. you'd want to put
it through an ir decoder like the one radio shack sells (part no. 276-137).
The encoder half requires a 556 dual timer. It should take you about four
hours to design & build on a couple breadboards, and can probably be powered
by the calc's own power supply.
