no, resistors don't need to be oriented any direction in particular.
I had the same problem with the parallel link.  I rebuilt and tested
the link many times.  I finally concluded that it just did not work
with my computer.  The serial link worked the second time thru,
after I got the red and white wires uncrossed (I connected them
backwards the first time).
