Last time I saw a 2 year old 260 mb hd was at least a couple
of years ago. Those were big back when I was in high school.
Anyway, as others have suggested, try partitioning and formatting
the drive, if that doesn't work, try and find a low level IDE
formatter. Its not usually recommend to low level format IDE
drives (its done at the factory), but you don't have much to
loose do you?
I've recovered drives this way before, but only twice.
Western Digital has a low level format utility on their web
site, but it only works on WD drives.
