If you guys are really serious about this whole "new calculator" thing, you 
should take a look at ELKS at http://www.linux.org.uk/ELKS-Home/index.html.

ELKS is a subset of linux.  If you don't want to use ELKS itself, you could 
probably learn a lot about OSes from it.

(Also one of the things hypothesized by the ELKS team is possible porting to 
the Z80, then we could run linux on our TIs! :-)
