micro=small
controller=well, controller
A microcontroller is basically a miniature microprocessor. They typically
operate at low speeds and have limited abilities in comparison to a
microprocessor. Many microcontrollers are 8-bit, but some are 16 bit or
more (where the number of bits indicates how wide the data path through
the microcontroller is). Microcontrollers are commonly used for things
like alarm systems, microwaves, dishwashers, walkmans, CD players, etc.
Small stuff where a processor is needed, but where a powerful processor is
either unnecessary or undesireable due to higher current draw, and thus
shorter battery life in portable stuff.
