Laptop hard drives only require +5v though and it doesn't really need
a stable mounting. But, the stupid thing will require minimum 2 'C'
batteries or 2 'D' batteries (with a charge pump power supply) or
probably more likely 4 'C' batteries if you want more than 2 hours of
operation.
All in all, a hard/floppy/tape/zip drive expander is a huge waste of
time.
