I don't know what the problem is, but I can say that I have had similar
trouble with my TI-85. It seems as if the batteries are dead, but they
aren't. When I adjust the contrast, nothing happens. The only way I
have found to fix it is to remove the batteries and then reinsert them,
loosing my memory in the process. (The backup battery doesn't seem to be
working either.) I was once able to fix it by waiting a few hours and
playing with the contrast some more. That didn't loose my memory. I
have no idea what the cause is, though.
