There are hundreds of AVR projects too.
Just forget the AVR and PIC. The HC11 has been arround longer. Just get
one of those. You can buy a PCB to make a great dev kit for only $5.
http://quake.greatland.com has an electronics section (The AHRC [robotics
club] and they use the HC)
