If I understand the IR receiver correctly, it is a transistor with a clear
case. If you were to put it into a completely light-free space and hook it
up as a transistor, it'd work just fine.
The cool thing is that this type of transistor actually has two bases. One
is that extra pin, the other is activated by shining IR light into the
junction. So you can turn the transistor on with the IR or with the extra
base connection.
