As the other guy said, the --|(-- is a capacitor. Sometimes --||-- is used
as well. A triangle like --|>-- indicates a diode. The horizontal lines in
the shape of a triangle (drawn above) usually indicate a "ground"
connection. Sometimes that means connecting to a metal chassis, other
times it just means connecting to the negative terminal of a battery. And
the circuit drawings or diagrams are also called schematics, so the
symbols are sometimes called schematic symbols.
