They're in series. If the 82 uses the same layout (most likely) as the 85,
then the positive terminal is in the lower left corner; the negative
terminal is in the lower right. BTW, those locations are as the calculator
sits on a table with the batteries facing up and the calc turned so the
batteries are on the end next to you.
Anyway, they're in series because this version of the Z80 needs 5v to run.
Four 1.5 volt batteries adds to 6v, but the batteries are never at full
voltage while they're being used, so it adds to something between 4.5 and
5.5v.
